FEATURED MOMENT:
January 4, 2006- No. 2 Texas defeated No. 1 USC 41-38 in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. Longhorn quarterback Vince Young threw for 267 yards and rushed for another 200, including the game-winning touchdown. Texas ended the Trojans’ 34-game winning streak to win its first national title since 1970.
OTHER NOTABLE DATES:
January 5, 1980- The West beat the East 20-10 in the East-West Shrine Classic at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, California. The MVP’s of the game were Texas A&M’s Jacob Greene and Cal’s Joe Rose. Over 72,000 fans were on hand to watch the annual all-star game.
January 6, 2007- In the inaugural International Bowl in Toronto, Cincinnati beat Western Michigan 27-24. In Brian Kelly’s first game as head coach for the Bearcats, Cincinnati jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first 20 minutes and held on despite a late charge by the Broncos.
January 7, 2007- Southern Miss scored 21 second-quarter points to beat Ohio 28-7 in the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala. The bowl marked the Bobcats first postseason appearance since 1968.
January 8, 1945- Navy beat Army Air Force in the only Pacific Ocean Areas Service Championship game, known as the Poi Bowl 14-0 in Honolulu.
January 9, 1977- The North beat the South, led by coach Don Shula, 27-24 in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. Rice quarterback Tommy Kramer was named MVP.
January 10, 1960- The East beat the West in the first all-collegiate Hula Bowl 34-8 in Honolulu. College Football Hall of Famer and Penn State quarterback Richie Lucas was the game’s MVP.
